Debbie Sledge on the International Day For the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Deb ornage

Many of us have experienced deep wounds as a result of abuse or cruelty in some form or another whether it be physical, emotional or mental. These experiences can stay with us and hinder us throughout our lives if not healed. It is a natural tendency and many times a necessity to tuck our pain away in order to survive or carry on, or protect others.  We may often have the tendency to hide the hurt away and not deal with it.  Some of us don’t realize the price we are paying and the peace that is being stolen from us ( as in the case of mental or emotional abuse ) until we see this happening to others or until we are finally free from this type of abuse. This type of abuse is a part of my story.  I now have an inner strength and peace because my experience forced me to press into God for healing.  He heard my heart and sent his word through loving people into my life.

The first step towards healing and freedom of mind body and soul is to share your heart with someone you can trust.  There are agencies, hotlines and resources to help women to get out of abusive situations.  If you have been effected or are in an abusive or painful situation I encourage you not to try and bear this alone.  It’s a brave step but you can do it!

In our blog, ‘Nothing Is Greater than Love’, we have provided a place to share and a place to encourage hope and healing.  We can never take the place of professional health providers but we can be friends listening with love and encouragement and sharing our own stories.  Visit our blog to share or encourage others and If you need a place to open up and begin your healing.  You are awesome. You deserve it! You have a destiny ahead of you, filled with life, love, and wholeness! There are others who need you to be a free and shining light so that they can also be released to shine theirs!

For me personally, the first and best person I know to share your story with, is the Lord Jesus.  His presence is just a prayer away! When your heart is so hurting that you have no words.  Jesus says “Come to Me… I’m speaking to you, yes you, with your heavily burdened heart and soul, come to Me and I will give you rest and healing… Take on my work , work with Me and get to know Me.  I’m stress free!  You will be loving your life for real”…{ my paraphrasing }

I like the following scripture translation of the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30 of The Message (MSG) Bible.

“Are you tired?  Worn out?  Burned out…?  Come to me.  Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.  I’ll show you how to take a real rest.  Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it.  Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.  I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.  Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

“Nothing is greater than Love”

Knowing some of my story, my sister Joni wrote this beautiful statement for me and for all of us…

I HAVE EARNED MY COURAGEOUS SPIRIT
I WAS ONCE A VICTIM OF ABUSE
I HAVE SURVIVED, I HAVE THRIVED
MANY OF US SUBMERGE

I AM YOUR SISTER, TAKE MY HAND
WE WILL SHARE OUR PAIN, OUR STORIES
WE WILL MANIFEST OUR FREEDOM
TOGETHER WE WILL BUILD A WALL TALL ENOUGH AND STRONG ENOUGH
TO OBLITERATE
VIOLENCE_ AGAINST US
I AM _____________(DEBBIE )
I AM YOUR SISTER
I STAND WITH
THE UNITED NATIONS ORANGE CAMPAIGN
TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

  1. Thank you Debbie and Joni for stepping forward and letting others know that they are not alone. The shame that comes with abuse makes you want to keep it hidden. Sharing the pain with trusted people is the first step to healing. Releasing it to Jesus is the step to freedom. I am proud of you and the work you are doing here. I know Mama Flo would be too.
    God Bless You,
